So, as I watch David Ortiz wind down his career, i ask this. Should career DH's be allowed in the HOF?

I have this argument with people. If you are a firm believer that no DH should ever get in, then obviously you don't think Ortiz should ever make it. however, since IMO Ortiz is arguably the best DH to ever play, i think the best at any given postition should get in the HOF.

The Sox have won 3 titles since he's been there, and who has been a more valuable member of that team over that stretch of time? No one. I think it's a no brainer. He is a DH because someone has to be a DH in the AL. If he were in the NL, we'd see him play first base everyday. The guy finished top 5 in MVP voting 5 years in a row. 9 time all star. 6 time silver slugger. He has a WS MVP. He's been given the Roberto Clemente Award. He's won a Home Run Derby. Last year, at 37 and coming off an Achilles injury, he was top 10 in home runs, RBIs, and AVG. He singlehandedly got his team into the WS while breaking my heart with that grand slam in game 2. He's been perhaps the most clutch postseason player in the last decade. If DH is your only argument against him, you better find a few more.

While I don't respect the DH position I respect Ortiz and what he has done In that position. My answer is yes. He is the greatest DH in history.

See, ya'll making some sense. People who hate, just hate on the DH. Listen, it's an official MLB position in the AL. How can they not be recognized in the HOF?

Band makes a great enough case to sway to me to say yes. That said, the HR derby has zero affect on his HOF chances, and DH is absolutely NOT a position.

How can you say it's not a position when half of the teams are REQUIRED to play one?

Who was playing first base @ STL in the World Series last year? Big Papi. They trusted him, at 38, to play first in the biggest games of their season, and they took 2 out of 3 to essentially take the series. And he was 7-9 at the plate in those games. I don't even like the guy, but I have to respect him.

1b, 2b, SS, CF, C, those are positions, defensive positions that make you go on the field and play, not sit on your ass for 2:45 of the 3 hrs the game is played. I already said I agree he's a HOFer based on Bands great post, he doesn't PLAY a position, unless you want to magically prove he does. He's a designated hitter, a designation created for guys who aren't good enough to play any of the 8 defensive positions.

If anyone here calls DH is "position" they have to be out of their fucking mind. Its a "hitting spot" and that's it. They don't have to worry about balls hit their way or make throws from afar to during a game. They sit and watch as position players play. I said he is the best at his position, although not a real "position".

Still Ortiz is the best at what he does. So he is a hall of famer.

It's mostly because nobody wants to see pitchers hit, because 99% of them absolutely suck at it and it bogs down an already sluggish game with pinch hitters. Young pitchers are having a difficult enough time staying healthy. I don't want them anywhere near the plate. The NL game is archaic.

Not putting DH's in is completely irrational. It would be like not putting American League pitchers in, because they don't hit. "They only play half the game!" Nobody has ever said this. Nobody has ever said this because it's retarded. They've also never said pitchers only pitch, because they can't hit. They pitch, because they're really fucking good at it, and that's all they have to do. How about closers? They pitch an inning a game, two or three times a week. Can there be anything more specific or more part time than a closer? DH is like playing fucking catcher in comparison to closers. But American League pitchers, and closers are in the hall of fame. And they should be. There have been great players at those positions. Great players who have helped their teams win lots of games. And World Series. These are no brainer hall of famers. DH's have some of those too. Edgar Martinez and David Ortiz belong for sure. No debate. Both are much better than Jim Rice, who despite being the lowest rung of a hall of famer, also belongs. Edgar and Ortiz are better. Put them in. The only thing that could stop David Ortiz is his rampant PED use.

Let's not put Mariano Rivera in the HOF either. A guy who lived and died with one single pitch should not be in the HOF. What a fucking abomination. (I'm being sarcastic as fucking hell btw)

Papi is a HOF. The guy is fucking nails and is old as dirt.
