Meh...i dunno. Hockey is way down the list of sports in the US. You could have put Ovechkin on the cover, and it wouldnt move as much as an NFL cover story.
As far as Subban is concerned, he's the best denfenseman in the NHL (and that's coming from a Boston area guy). It's just that hockey is below NFL, MLB and NBA.

Jermz, bruh, in case you haven't noticed, unless im mistaken, Jonas Gray is black. So no race card would exist when they are choosing one black guy over the other.  .....its all about NFL being king and no one caring about the NHL. They put the NHL player on the cover at a place where they care about the NHL. And we care about the NFL and some no name scored 4 TDs in a prime time game while playing for the best team in the NFL and a storied franchise. Its all really simple.

Yeah, it's anti-NHL more than anything.
As for how the NHL chooses to promote Subban, there is a little bit of a problem there. But that has more to do with the fact that Subban is a piece of shit on the ice, and that's not race related either. NHL loved promoting squeaky clean Jarome Iginla. They just don't know what to do with a great villain like Subban.
